Frequently Asked Questions About Cognito EODD Pumps
Cognito electrically operated double diaphragm (EODD) pumps are engineered for industries that demand performance, reliability, and efficiency. Built to deliver the benefits of air-operated diaphragm (AODD) pumps—with the added control and energy savings of positive displacement (PD) electric pumps—Cognito units are rugged, sealless, and smart.
Whether you're exploring options for abrasive slurries, shear-sensitive fluids, or energy-conscious operations, these FAQs cover the most common questions we hear from customers. From performance and maintenance to control, safety, and applications—find the answers you need to determine if Cognito is the right fit for your operation.

Performance
An electric diaphragm pump uses a motor-driven mechanism to move flexible diaphragms back and forth, creating suction and discharge to transfer fluid. The sealless design isolates the fluid, allowing for reliable, leak-free operation — ideal for handling abrasive, viscous, or shear-sensitive materials.
Absolutely. Cognito EODD pumps are specifically engineered to handle abrasive fluids like ceramic slip. Hardened stainless steel stopper cages (ball cages) protect critical areas such as manifold elbows and outer fluid chambers, significantly extending service life compared to standard aluminum. The internal flow path is designed to direct fluid toward the durable outer diaphragm plates, reducing direct impact on the diaphragms and enhancing overall longevity.
Yes — fluids containing solids can be pumped easily without causing damage to the pump. This is possible thanks to the open-tolerance design of the fluid flow path, similar to other diaphragm pump technologies engineered by Warren Rupp/IDEX.
Yes — Cognito EODD pumps are fully self-priming and can achieve suction lifts up to 8 meters (26 feet) in wet conditions. Plus, with no rotating mechanical seals to fail or leak, they offer reliable, leak-free operation.
Cognito EODD pumps are an excellent choice for shear-sensitive fluids. Their gentle pumping action and absence of close-tolerance components help prevent product separation or damage, making them ideal for handling materials like paint, latex, and other delicate fluids.
The recommended control method for Cognito EODD pumps is through a variable speed drive (VFD), which offers precise flow control and protects the motor during startup. A soft starter can also be used, but it offers less flexibility. For deadhead applications, installing a pressure sensor on the discharge side is ideal to monitor system pressure. All EODD pump systems should include a pressure relief valve and/or a circulation loop to protect against pressure spikes and ensure safe operation.
Safety
Leak detection comes standard on all Cognito units. Integrated probes can be wired to the pump controls to automatically shut the pump down in the event of a diaphragm failure or fluid leak.
Cognito pumps feature double shaft lip seals and PTFE-coated spill containment chambers that capture any fluid entering behind the diaphragm. This design protects the people, the pump, and the process, preventing leaks and internal damage, unlike many other pump technologies.
Yes — Cognito EODD pumps operate at less than 80 dB across the entire flow range. In comparison, AODD pumps can exceed 100 dB, well above the 85 dB threshold where hearing protection is typically required.
Sustainability, Efficiency & Cost Reduction
Yes — Cognito EODD pumps can reduce energy usage by up to 75% compared to pneumatic pumps. They also free up air compressor capacity since they operate without the need for compressed air.
No — Cognito EODD pumps are designed for easy, low-cost maintenance. The drive side requires only periodic oil changes, while the fluid side uses affordable diaphragms and valve balls that can be replaced as needed. There are no costly rotating mechanical seals, rotors, or stators to maintain.
Yes — customers can specify their preferred motor and gearbox brands. Warren Rupp will assist in ensuring proper selection. Since the motor and gearbox are independent of the pump head, they can be repaired or replaced in the future without disturbing the fluid piping.
Applications & Industries
Cognito EODD pumps are ideal for demanding applications with long duty cycles, high-viscosity or abrasive fluids, and operations focused on energy savings, including:
-
Wastewater/Filter Press Feed: Delivers consistent high pressures and flow rates — up to 8 bar (116 psi) and 800 LPM (211 GPM) — making it well-suited for filter press applications.
-
Corrugated Packaging: Transfers starch, inks, and glues that are viscous, abrasive, and shear-sensitive. Also used for sump evacuation.
-
Ceramic Transfer: Handles glaze and slip delivery in the production of ceramic fixtures and converters.
-
Tank Bottom Recirculation: Provides reliable recirculation of fluids from tank bottoms to maintain process consistency.
Cognito EODD pumps are trusted across a wide range of demanding industries, including:
-
Oil and Gas: Bottom recirculation, hot glycol wellhead recirculation
-
Ceramics: Slip and glaze transfer or recirculation
-
Packaging/Corrugated Boxes: Starch, ink, and glue delivery, as well as sump evacuation and wastewater handling
-
Wood Treatment: Reliable chemical delivery for treatment processes
-
Paints and Coatings: Paint transfer, latex transfer, and railcar unloading
